Al Qasimi Foundation Named One of the Leading Regional Think Tanks in the World

The Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi Foundation for Policy Research has been listed as one of the best free standing regional studies centers in the world by the University of Pennsylvania in their 2016 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report. The Foundation is one of only three Middle Eastern think tanks to be included on the prestigious list.

In addition to being listed as one of the best free standing centers, this year the Foundation was again included as one of the top think tanks in the Middle East and North Africa region. It was one of four Emirati institutions listed and joined the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies in the top 50.

This marks the Foundation’s seventh consecutive year being featured in the report, having previously been recognized multiple times as one of the world’s top new think tanks as well as one of the best in the region.

Over 6,800 organizations were nominated in this year’s report. The rankings are based on the votes of more than 4,750 peer institutions and reflect the value of the Foundation’s contributions to the international community.

“We are pleased to have our contributions recognized by our peers. Being included in this report speaks to the quality and influence of our work on the global stage,” says Dr. Natasha Ridge, Executive Director of the Al Qasimi Foundation.

The report also highlights the critical role think tanks play as bridges between knowledge (academia) and power (politicians and policymakers). Policymakers have come to value the independent analysis provided by think tanks, especially in regards to the creation and dissemination of understandable, reliable, and useful research.

“Increasingly, policymakers are turning to think tanks they know and trust to validate their positions on key policy issue, to check facts and sort through the flood of conflicting opinions and information that crosses their desks each day,” explains Dr. James G. McGann, author of the 2016 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report.

The Al Qasimi Foundation’s mission is to further the social, economic, and cultural development of Ras Al Khaimah and the United Arab Emirates. This is done through generating and supporting innovative, quality research and programs focused on education and related policy areas in order to inform decisions and support the creation of relevant, effective public policies.

While there has been a recent growth of organizations in the Gulf that focus on education, the Foundation is unique in the region as it conducts evidence-based research to not only develop policy recommendations, but to also create and inform programs that address the challenges faced by the community. Its research feeds directly into policy and the policy into practice.

The Foundation’s delivery of demand-driven programs initiated from the ground-up and supported by researchers has enabled a hybrid model of philanthropy that is rooted in the community.

“Even as Gulf institutions are gaining international credibility in the global education sector, they have not yet been able to address many of their own local issues. The Foundation focuses on developing sound, research-based interventions that we hope will have a direct impact on our stakeholders but also can inform global discussions and best practices,” says Dr. Ridge.

“Of importance to our successes are our research collaborations and programmatic partnerships. It is through these relationships that we are able to examine the critical issues as well as translate our findings into practical applications for meaningful interventions. We hope this recognition leads to even more opportunities to collaborate as we continue to support sustainable development in Ras Al Khaimah, the emirates, and beyond.”
