Sustainable Urban Planning for Arid Coastal Environments

Dubai studio’s landscape architect Samar Zarifa was recently invited to present her award winning research on "Inspiring Outdoor Liveability in Arid Coastal Environments," as part of the Majlis talk series at the Al Qasimi Foundation, in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.
Samar’s presentation discussed sustainable landscape strategies and urban planning for arid coastal environments, such as those found in the United Arab Emirates. In particular, Samar detailed her research work focusing on a historic abandoned village as a potential master planning site in the area referred to as Al Jazeerah Al Hamra.
Event attendees included urban planning professionals working at the Ras Al Khaimah government Project Management Office (PMO), members from various educational institutes, as well as Foundation staff and community members who were generally interested in the site.
Samar has previously presented her research at the International Institute for Advanced Studies (IIAS) 7th Annual International Conference on Architecture of the 21st Century, Germany. At the event, Samar was also selected to become an Associate Member of the College of the IIAS in recognition of her scholarly work and contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the field of landscape architecture.
