30/08/2010

Omar Aziz, a former student of the Ras Al Khaimah English Speaking School (RAKESS), has taken on the Climb for a Cure: Africa Challenge 2011 and is preparing to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in February next year to raise awareness for cancer research. The Al Qasimi Foundation is very pleased to support Omar's efforts towards this very important cause and wishes him the very best on his expedition.

A brief bio has been provided by Omar below, and the Foundation will be posting an update once the climb has been completed. The Foundation encourages donations towards this cause.

Wrap Text around Image"I have been fortunate enough to recieve a substantial humanitarian scholarship from the Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi Foundation. The funds will go directly to Cure Cancer Australia Foundation as I embark upon a journey to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise awareness for cancer research.

Having lived in Ras Al Khaimah for over six years, recieivng my education at Ras Al Khaimah English Speaking School provided me a unique oppurtunity to engage with the local community and observe health concerns within the public hospital system. My education at RAKESS provided the foundation from where I decided to pursue a career in medicine, I am currently finishing a Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours project - Prostate Cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia) and am now on the verge of pursuing a graduate medical degree at the University of Sydney (Australia). Receiving a quality education within Ras Al Khaimah was paramount in my choosing to pursue a career in medicine, the teaching staff at RAKESS provided the academic framework to pursue this passion. I was moved by the plight of the doctors working in the wards on Saqr hospital as well as the pharmacologists working at Julphar. Having seen Ras Al Khaimah grow into the Emirate it is today has been humbling experience, the social, economic, health and education reforms has made me realise the imperative nature of community spirit which His Highness Sheikh Saud alluded to in a speech he delivered in late 2006 which had a profound effect on me and made me realise the unique oppurtunity I had been given in Ras Al Khaimah. All young individuals in Ras Al Khaimah should realise that this same oppurtunity exists to excel and realise the potential one has to really make a difference. I thank the Al Qasimi Foundation for their continuing support through this scholarship.
