Public Policy Majlis: Early Diagnosis of Autism in Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates

According to the Center for Disease Control in the United States, one in 68 children suffer from autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is currently one of the most common causes of disability among children in the world. Screening tests and systematic observations are available to help detect and diagnose ASD in young children under two years of age. Unfortunately, most children get diagnosed much later, which significantly reduces the effectiveness of therapeutic measures, and thus, the chances for independent living in the future.

This majlis will discuss some of the latest autism research findings and address common myths and misconceptions associated with ASD. The presentation will highlight challenges related to early diagnosis, and what can be done to help pediatricians recognize potential cases so children and their families receive treatment and support as early as possible.

Agata Wentz is a clinical speech-language pathologist, an early intervention therapist, a linguist and an educator. She is currently a Visiting Scholar at the Al Qasimi Foundation and a PhD Candidate at the Chair of Speech Therapy and Developmental Disorders of the Pedagogical University of Krakow.
