Let’s play, read, and talk together: The importance of young children’s interactions with their caregivers

During the early childhood years, caregiver-child interactions provide formative experiences that impact children’s school readiness and academic and social competence.

This Majlis will focus on the social and instructional nature of caregiver-child interactions. During the early childhood years, caregiver-child interactions tend to be about a joint focus of attention, often a physically present object or an event. The presentation will discuss recent research findings how caregivers and children coordinate attention, emotion, and behavior during social interactions. It will also highlight risk factors that might impair a caregiver’s ability to engage in positive interactions with children and offer recommendations for caregivers about engaging in stimulating social and instructional interactions in various everyday activities.
