The UAE’s Performance on PISA: Gender Differences in Comparative Perspective

Given the important role education plays in social and economic development, countries around the world are interested in ensuring their students are gaining needed skills to make them competitive globally. International large-scale assessments, such as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), present the opportunity to compare students’ academic achievement to their peers around the world. Results from these assessments point to a large gender gap in reading, science, and math.

This policy majlis examines the UAE’s performance on PISA in relation to other countries. It focuses on understanding gender gaps in performance on the 2015 PISA, and compares Emiratis to other Arab students from Qatar, Jordan, Algeria, and Tunisia. It explores what student, school, and national level factors affect overall performance and gender gaps.
