Examining Education Reform in the United Arab Emirates: Challenges and Opportunities

Since the establishment of the Ministry of Education in 1971, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has undertaken significant education reforms to improve its education system. This has led to questions around what kinds of reform initiatives have been implemented over the years, what were their strengths and weaknesses, how did different stakeholders view the reforms, and how efficient and effective were the reform implementation processes?

This policy majlis will discuss the various drivers of K-12 education reform in the UAE as well as some of the emerging patterns and characteristics of previous reform efforts. It will then identify the key challenges and opportunities in the existing reform framework, and conclude with recommendations that would support the effective implementation of education reforms in the future.

Brian Jaewon Chung is a Research Projects Coordinator at the Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi Foundation for Policy Research.
